SINGAPORE — We recently caught up with Mohammed Nadirsha, an in-demand immersive technology engineer for top companies. He has worked on numerous projects for global companies across Singapore, Sweden, India, Dubai, Oman, and Ecuador. His current focus area is on leveraging mixed reality to develop innovative cutting-edge technology for the next generation of Air Traffic Control systems.

Mohammed has an interesting technical-commercial background. He started his career as an accomplished aerospace engineer – he studied Aerospace Engineering from the prestigious National Aerospace University; and subsequently completed his Masters in Aerospace Engineering from both the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and the Technical University of Munich.

As an entrepreneur, Mohammed launched OriginX, an organisation dedicated to advancing education and learning within dedicated innovation labs for students in the Middle East and India. Mohammed is recognized for his research contributions in the field of Mixed Reality and Aviation, having published two research papers on the topic.

We asked him to help us better understand the metaverse and all things included. Let’s get started eh!

The potential of immersive technology to transform various industries and improve human experiences is what got me interested in this field.

Mohammedd Nadirsha, Immersive Technology Developer

How do you define the metaverse?

The Metaverse is an emerging technology that aims to create a more immersive and interactive virtual world where people can engage in a wide range of activities such as learning, shopping, socializing, gaming, and more. Although there is no definitive definition for the Metaverse, it is a concept that many companies are actively developing to create a more engaging and exciting 3D world where people can connect with each other in different avatars and engage in activities that are not bound by physical limitations.

What got you interested in immersive technology?

Mainly its unlimited potential to apply in numerous industries to enhance the experience and solve problems by integrating with other tools.

Immersive technology has always fascinated me due to its limitless potential to enhance experiences and solve problems in numerous industries. The ability to integrate with other tools and technologies makes it even more exciting as it allows for seamless and innovative solutions.

The possibilities with immersive technology are endless. For example, in the field of education, immersive technology can be used to create interactive and engaging learning experiences, which can significantly improve retention and understanding. In healthcare, immersive technology can provide more precise and effective treatment by enabling doctors to visualize and interact with complex medical data.

Moreover, in the entertainment industry, immersive technology can take gaming and other forms of entertainment to a whole new level by creating fully-realized virtual worlds and experiences that allow users to completely immerse themselves in the content.

Overall, the potential of immersive technology to transform various industries and improve human experiences is what got me interested in this field. I’m excited to see how this technology will continue to evolve and revolutionize the way we interact with the world around us.

What’s your proudest achievement in this space?

Sweden - Mohammed demonstrating Mixed Reality prototype for Air Traffic Controllers to enhance situational awareness and planning.

In my current work, I have been involved in building Mixed Reality software that is specifically designed for HoloLens 2 hardware. Our goal is to enhance situational awareness for air traffic controllers and to develop next-generation remote control towers. My work has got selected at USA / Europe Air Traffic Conference conducted by FAA and EuroControl. Also my work got selected at prestigious ISMAR 2022 Conference conducted in Singapore.

One of the major advantages of this Mixed Reality technology is that it offers significant cost savings over traditional physical control towers. By providing remote control capabilities for multiple airports from a central location, it reduces the need for expensive on-site infrastructure. Additionally, it can transform any room into a control tower simply by wearing a Mixed Reality device, allowing for even greater flexibility and efficiency.

This technology offers numerous benefits for air traffic controllers as well. By utilizing Mixed Reality, it provides a more intuitive and immersive interface that enables controllers to quickly and easily understand and respond to changing situations. This can help to reduce errors and increase overall efficiency and safety.

Furthermore, the technology has the potential to improve situational awareness for controllers by providing them with enhanced visualization tools, such as detailed 3D maps, live video feeds, and real-time data overlays. These tools help to provide a more comprehensive understanding of airport operations and potential risks.

What are the possibilities of this technology?

By integrating with other cutting-edge technologies, Extended Reality (XR) has the potential to be much more than just an immersive world. In fact, it is moving towards the development of a digital twin that offers an entirely new level of interaction with complex data.

One significant advantage of XR is its ability to incorporate Natural User Interface (NUI) technologies. With NUI, users can interact with digital data in a way that is more intuitive and natural, enabling them to better understand and analyze complex information.

For example, in an industrial setting, an XR-powered digital twin can provide technicians with a realistic 3D representation of a physical machine, allowing them to troubleshoot and fix issues without needing to be physically present. This can save significant time and resources while also improving safety and efficiency.

In healthcare, XR-powered digital twins can provide doctors with an immersive and interactive view of a patient’s anatomy, allowing for better visualization and understanding of medical conditions. This technology can lead to improved diagnosis and treatment, resulting in better patient outcomes.

Overall, by integrating with other technologies and incorporating NUI, XR is moving towards the creation of a digital twin that has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with complex data and the world around us.

...any final words?

We are currently experiencing an era of remarkable technological advancements that are significantly impacting people’s lives. There has never been a better time in history to design, code, and build something entirely from the comfort of your own room and achieve success. The key to achieving success in this realm is through the continuous process of learning and executing.

Lastly, the internet and online resources like Udemy and Coursera can also provide ample learning opportunities for XR. There are several online courses, tutorials, and forums available that can help you learn the basics of XR and the technologies behind it. By exploring these resources, you can gain a better understanding of XR and how it can be used to enhance human experiences.

In addition to movies and stories, there are several other resources that you can explore. Attending conferences, seminars, and events related to XR can be an excellent way to connect with like-minded individuals and gain valuable knowledge and insights.

One of the best ways to learn about extended reality (XR) is to explore movies and stories that incorporate it, such as Iron Man, Ready Player One, Tron, Minority Report, and The Matrix series. These films offer fascinating insights into the potential of XR and how it can significantly impact human life.
