PARIS — At this year’s Vivatech Paris, we quickly caught up with Nikitas Papadopulos, software engineer at Biped.ai, based in Lausanne, and got to discover everything about Biped, a smart harness for blind and visually-impaired people.

Biped went into commercialisation with the European market in September and will soon venture into wider markets like the US Market.

Nikitas Papadopoulos, Software Engineer @ Biped.ai

Key takeaways from our talk:

  • Biped was founded one and half years ago and is a smart harness that can be worn over the shoulders. It has a camera margin on the left, a computational margin on the right and batteries at the back. The product detects, tracks and predicts the objects and obstacles in the environment of the person wearing it. It helps blind and visually-impaired people in understanding their environment better.
  • The feedback is given through spatial audio in 3D. Different objects have distinct non-invasive sounds which helps in their differentiation. The system prioritises the most dangerous obstacle around the user and warns them by a sound coming from the direction of the threatening obstacle.
  • Blind and visually-impaired people are stressed with tasks which seem mundane for us. Biped brings autonomous car features to guide partially-sighted pedestrians so that they can understand, for example when cars are coming, or when there is an obstacle. Biped reduces the stress that comes with having to interact with the surrounding environment.
  • Biped launched in the European market in September and will soon venture into the US.
  • Biped is developing their software in-house, and designing the algorithms in-house to create audio feedback and proritisation while the hardware is outsourced to another company in Switzerland.
  • Biped is in its Series C round and has already raised from venture capitalists and private investors
