PARIS — We quickly caught up with Rebecca Ravenni,  Investment Analyst, Techstars Paris at this year’s Vivatech to get to know more about Techstars, what’s next, and how they are pushing for greater DEI.

Techstars operates accelerator programs that aim to help entrepreneurs succeed. We learnt that there are about 3000 companies in their portfolio: this includes startups, along with 90 unicorns and 6 companies that went public. With a market capitalization of $73 billion, it is currently operating 50 accelerator programs worldwide.

Vivatech is an annual tech conference in Paris. Rebecca tells us that Vivatech is an important event for Techstars — both for visibility and for strengthening its position in the ecosystem and to mark that Techstars plays a role in helping entrepreneurs willing to make a better future with the use of technology.

Techstars is keen to invest on female founders who are willing to make a bright future in terms of technology.

Key takeaways from our talk:

  • Techstars is committed to raising awareness among entrepreneurs about the necessity of sustainability and making them realize that business and sustainability can be reconciled and need not be mutually exclusive.
  • Techstars has a willingness and ambition to have a class of companies with female founders. They are also keen on having women mentors in their mentorship programs to guide fellow female colleagues.
  • Techstars generally invests in pre-seed companies but the team plays a key role in their decisions to invest, followed by the impact the solution creates, the size of the market, and how disruptive the product/service is. Since the founders go through a grueling 90-day mentorship program, the main focus, however, is to invest in ambitious and motivated people.
  • Techstars invests  $100,000 USD in terms of equity and convertible notes. $20,000 is invested for 6% equity and up to $100,000 in the form of convertible notes. In addition,  the Techstar package also includes resources, support, and a worldwide network.
